We are now fully situated in our new home at Morgan Run Golf Club. We had a great meeting with many great guests.

Charles Foster led us in the pledge. He spoke words of inspiration reminding us that we can make this a great year with community service and making the world a better place with our Rotarian service.

Our guests today included Bill and Suzanne Sutton who paid us a return visit. Alexandra Spector came back for more. She is heading toward red badge membership. Interact kids from Canyon Crest Academy Troy Nohra, Julie and Sarah joined us. Sue Atkinson and Karl Mueller from Canyon Crest Academy were here as well.

Our meeting today was conducted by the Canyon Crest Academy Interact president, Troy Nohra. He acquitted himself admirably in getting all our business done.

There were many people expressing their happiness today.

Zoran Knezevic led off and was $10 happy because he missed us. I guess that makes us $10 happy because we missed him.

Susan Hennenfent continued her state of happiness (13 straight weeks and counting). She was $2 happy for Tom Slipper selling a VIP tent for the bocce tournament.

Which means, Kevin Cahill was right behind with his own state of happiness (12 weeks and counting). Kevin was $5 happy because he was able to help secure $10 million in funding for Scripps Health research and development. Way to go Kevin!!

Randy Jones made an effort for a do over on his birthday this past Monday. Randy paid $5 for his trip to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show. Randy was dazzled by the new fandangoe toys. Randy is the poster boy for the saying: what happens in Vegas should only happen to us.

Diane Huckabee was $20 happy for the gift of vision. Having pulled through her cataract surgery this week, she can see clearly now of her right eye. She notices things she had noticed before, such as: dirt and messiness around the house; a wrinkle or two around the eyes; the diminishing hairline on el presidente. Be careful what you wish for Diane.

Hakan Sakul was $5 happy celebrating his one year anniversary in the club.

We had a couple of fines today. Zoran Knezevic basically fined himself for being late. Zoran spun the Rotary wheel of fortune and landed on 11. He correctly answered that the first Rotary club outside the United States was in Canada in 1908. Zoran, remarkably knew the answer to this question because he had spun it before. What are the odds? He avoided the fine with the correct answer.

And then our good doctor, Seymour Myers, was fined for leaving last week’s meeting early. He also took a spin on the good wheel. Rather than risk the question and answer part of the wheel, he paid the dollars. All nineteen of them.

Karl Mueller is the Principal of Canyon Crest Academy. He spoke about all the good things that are happening at CCA. Karl came from Coronado High School and the Coronado school district. He wanted the challenge of managing a much larger school in a much larger district. Plus many of his role model principals were in this district.

Karl spoke in particular of the four C’s. This is not to be confused with the three R’s which no longer rule the day. The four C’s are not my grades in math, algebra, geometry and trigonometry; rather, it stand for critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and committee work. Actually, there is very little committee work done at school. I just can’t remember the fourth C. Help me out friends.

This approach to education is changing the way the standardized test will be administered and the colleges will evaluate its applications. Karl also spoke of the importance of fish learning to climb trees. And each student has his or her own strengths that need to be fostered and encouraged. This is what CCA strives for with its students.

So there you have it. Should I been unable, for whatever reason, to lead a meeting in the future, we can ask Troy Nohra to lead the meetings. Unfortunately, Troy does not have a gavel either.

Remember, before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you are a mile away and wearing their shoes.
