In 1982, Dr. Russell Low began researching his family's history, beginning with his great-grandmother Ah Ying, who in the 1880s, came to the California as a 9-year-old slave. Dr. Low credits much of who is today to this strong woman, who escaped her captures multiple times and went on to marry and have five children. Dr. Low has written multiple books about his family, starting with Three Coins which details the story of Ah Ying.
